What is important is if you are using a PC you use a PC formatted drive, but if you are using a Mac you should use a pre-formatted for Mac drive, it will make your life easier. WTF did do to their drives to cause them to brick when you format them? It looks like maybe they partitioned the drive or put a Volume on there and that’s causing them to brick when you erase the partition using Disk Utility.Deborah, if you plan to use drive for Quicken Backup only, the drive needs no special formatting.

Found the solution on here: (1) connect the drive to your Mac, (2) open Disk Utility (3) in the far left sidebar, use the dropdown to change View to “all devices” (4) voila, the bricked disk shows up (5) NOW erase the drive, make sure you’re using a GUID partition and Mac OS Extended Journaled. Thought it was a bad drive, so returned/exchanged it. Went to format it to Mac OS Journaled using Disk Utility and it bricked instantly. I have had the exact same problem this evening. Nothing works trying to erase the disk - not the proper Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format or any other formats erase, although it opens a box that says it is erasing. Using Disk Utility the HD shows as disk3s1 (yours is disk2s1). This came up with Time Machine, but then Time Machine doesn’t see the HD. I am getting the same fail message you are - “MediaKit reports not enough space on device for requested operation.” This should not be the case as my iMac drive is 1.1 TB and is only one third full.
